“I am so thankful to you guys.  I never thought this could really happen, but you made it happen!”

Fenel Jean, Village leader:  Desab, Haiti

Letter1   Have you ever tried to imagine a world where there were no doctors?  Desab, Haiti is a beauLetter8tiful mountainous village without electricity, without running water, without vehicles and, until recently, without health care.

Located north of Port-Au-Prince, the Desab region has a population of over 9,000.  The average income is less than $500 a year.  The citizens experience so many hardships, yet we have been moved by their capacity for joy, pride and spirituality.

We first traveled to Desab in 2006, assisting with a makeshift medical clinic.  Natives would walk for hours to get this rare opportunity to see a doctor or nurse from our Vermont group.  It was an emotional experience but, to say the least, it was only a band aid solution; we passionately wanted to take it to another level.

In 2008, we embarked on an ambitious undertaking:  To create a full-time, self-sustaining medical clinic in Desab.  Working with village leaders, we were able to secure a doctor, nurse, clinic space and, most important, funding.   In November 2008, the medical clinic in Desab began operating on a year-round basis, with local health care staffing.

“This is our people doing something for themselves; helping to make the community healthier”

Clinic Facts and Figures

  • Medical clinics are held twice weekly
  • Staffing consists of a doctor, nurse, lab technician and pharmacist, who are based in the town of Cabaret, seven miles from Desab.
  • Additional staff- including health assistants and a cook- are comprised of Desab residents.
  • A dentist and hygienist make one monthly visit.

Dedication

The community and the medical team are committed to making this project successful.  In February 2009, a rainstorm washed out the crude dirt road leading to Desab.  Undeterred, Dr. Dorcelus (right) and his staff walked the seven miles up the mountain, insuring that the clinic would open as scheduled.  Considering his salary was just $16 per day, that shows quite a commitment!  Additionally, the program has been heartily embraced by the local residents, who not only utilize the services, but also pitch in to help maintain the clinic.

Our Goal

For the continued success and long-term operation of the Desab clinic money is needed.  Costs include:

  • Raises in salary for the doctor and staff
  • Purchase of medicine, furniture and supplies

100% of your donation will go directly to the Desab medical clinic!

Making a difference:  A little goes a long way

Despite a rough current economy, a major donor has come forward to support the clinic for 2010, by matching, dollar-Letter5for-dollar, all other donations.
We are so grateful for the support that has gotten us this far. Broken bones are no longer left unattended...  Infections are now headed off by medicine… Infants and seniors alike are given proper attention!

For the price of a used car, we can operate the Desab clinic for all of 2010, and medical assistance will reach many people in need.
Many charitable organizations need to assess certain “administrative” fees but, we assure you, our time, travel and expenses are entirely voluntary; 100% of your donation will go towards the Desab clinic.

Through our organization, The Vermont Haiti Project, your donation of any amount is tax deductible.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. and thank you for your time and interest in reading this letter and considering support for this effort.
